Brandon Marsh on playing for Phillies vs Angels

Cool memory for your daughter.

When I was a kid I got to run out on the field with the Quakes. I was accompanied by a guy named Stony Briggs.

Years later, I was trying to remember his name, and all I could think of was "Bumpy Grimes." And an internet identity was born.

Mine got to run the bases at the Big A about 12 or 13 years ago. She was super excited and went on an Angels fandom run for a couple of seasons. She also got some autographs during the All Star fan fest and was pretty excited at the time.  Then she stopped wanting to go to games because they lost everyone we went to. She's lucky the desire to be a fan left her not long after.

Yesterday it was an obligation because my daughter got to walk the field with her softball team. I felt like that dude from A Clockwork Orange with his eyes pinned open being forced to see terrible things watching that game.

This organization is such a mess right now. It has to be one of the worst in all of sports right now. It starts at the top and in the front office. I think someone posted that free agents try and stay away from the Angels unless there are no other offers anywhere else. I think there’s enough talent on this team to at least make a run at the playoffs, but it sounds like everything behind the scenes is a complete mess and way behind other teams. Hurts knowing we completely wasted Trout and Ohtani and it’ll be a while before this organization is competent again. It’s hard to have any hope until Arte is gone.

No way the talent is there or ready to make that happen this season. I think guys like Adell, Neto and O'Hoppe continuing to develop gives a little hope for 25 and beyond.

Sounds to me like the biggest problem was just a lack of communication, again.

I may be wrong but I don’t think this is the first time we’ve heard about players just being left in the dark about their place on the team.  It shouldn’t be hard to sit a player down and say look, you’re not an established player yet and so we’re going to put you in spots we feel you can succeed in to start and how we see you handle it will determine how much you play moving forward.

Then tell them some things they’re doing well, some things that need improvement, and say you can always come talk to me if you have a question.  I do this with youth and teen ball players and their parents, it’s called coaching.  The Angels didn’t do anything wrong except for perhaps not having open lines of communication.

He did have nearly 300 plate appearances in the first half of 2022 and in July, before he was traded he started 20 of 24 games.  He was getting the playing time.  I have no idea if Nevin communicated with him, but he certainly played him.  My thoughts on Maddon is he was billed as this incredible communicator, but that never seemed to be the case.

my daughter got to run the bases about 15 years ago. i think i loved it more than she did.

today she's a fan, a big fan. watches multiple games each day. she's going to be at all three phillies games this week because that's her second favorite team. i'll be there with her tomorrow night. i'm glad she loves baseball this much.

What I’ve learned is it’s always the organizations fault and never the player.  Except Rendon.

Rendon was a mirage with a tier 6 body.

The Marsh trade got us o'hoppe who we needed more than Marsh at the time and still do.

If Wash can get them to clean up the errors and mental mistakes, they would be a fun group to watch develop.

Well.... I love O'Hoppe, but I'm not sure that the timing of the trade did make sense.

If we were actually "all in" with Ohtani, then surely you want the young MLBer in Marsh over the still developing prospect in O'Hoppe.

For instance, last year Marsh made $1mm and generated 3.6 WAR. He would have been the most productive Angels batter outside of Ohtani. Instead, Renfroe for $10mm and 0.4 WAR, ugh.

I'll reiterate that I love O'Hoppe, but it was certainly an odd trade if the Angels were truly "all in" during the Ohtani window.

Rumor has it Trout was caught trying to sneak into the visitors clubhouse after the game tonight. As he was escorted away, he could be heard shouting to Bryce Harper, “Take me with you!”

Adell in the meantime was discovered wearing whiteface and a glued on beard as he attempted to convince Phillies manager Rob Thompson that he was Brandon Marsh.

And finally, in a strange turn of events, Mark Gubicza attempted to announce on the new defunct “Threads” (a pathetic attempt at a Twitter/X alternative because lefties hate Elon) that he would be joining the Phillies broadcast team. No one read the message and Wayne Randazzo was found consoling Gubi as they returned to the Angels broadcast booth.

Arte must love John Fisher taking the heat away from otherwise being called out as the worst owner in MLB. This franchise is a complete shit show and has been for quite some time. What makes no sense, other than Arte changes his mind on his irrational whims of the moment, is deciding to go for it at the deadline and immediately reversing course in the offseason. Don't get me wrong, I am glad that they did reverse course but I'd like to think that Perry knew they should trade Ohtani and some others to build depth and start the rebuild last season but Arte stepped in to sink the franchise even further into irrelevance.

I am trying to find the positives, mostly in that there are some nice young hitters that could develop but it is a really sad time to be an Angels fan. I can barely make it through three innings of a game and we are still in April. The best moments of the past decade all came outside of the on-field performance: Trout signing an extension, Ohtani signing, and when it was announced that Arte was pursuing selling the franchise. The worst moment, by far for me and I'd imagine many others, was when Arte again reversed course and decided to keep the team. Thankfully, I have Oregon football to look forward to in the fall at least.

did you recently take some kind of continuing ed class where they suggested you put everything into different tiers?

No... It's been the same issue since Stoneman left.  A lack of quality reserves that resulted in guys being called up with no specific role other than "emergency guy" or "no other options" and then being expected to perform as if they were veterans.

Had they simply invested in quality backups they wouldn't have needed to dip into the minors and throw guys into the fire.  Who was the last guy (non Trout), that forced a promotion by tearing through every level of the minors and having nothing left to prove before being called up, maybe Howie?  It's crazy when you think about it.

Even Howie had to be sent back down before he stuck for good.

I think it was some flash in the pan named Trout.

Please keep politics off the board. Reported.

I see no problem with it because, as opposed to pretty much anything you post, his was actually funny.

You were his target audience!
