OC Register: What do the Angels need to add to their roster for 2024?

Recommended Posts

Both Gray and Montgomery have been consistent and healthy.

Both sat on 91-93 mph in their WC game, with a solid mix of other pitches.

Both are stingy enough on the gopher ball, especially Gray.

Gray will be 34 in 2024, Montgomery 31.

Gray might have the edge because the Halos have enough LHP, unless they trade Anderson and eat half the remaining salary?

Then there’s Yamamoto.

Have a feeling we will get one of the Japanese pitchers not named Yamamoto. To get Gray or Montgomery to come here would only happen if we overpay.

They need to go into the season just accepting the fact that Rendon and Trout are what they are. They are no longer 140+ games guys. There's a 3 year track record now that you can pretty much predict what you're going to get because they are not getting any younger. Figure about 50 games of .700 OPS production from Rendon and about 80 games of about .900 OPS production from Trout. Expect absolutely nothing after the All-Star Break from either of them at this point. Only Trout has played any games after the break (2022) the last 6 games other than a game, or two here and there. That's 5 out of 6 seasons where they have been basically non-existent on the field after the break.

If Ohtani leaves, you have 600+ plate appearances at the DH slot that open up. That might help the two of them stay healthy by cycling them through the DH slot, but it seems to me that most of their injuries have occurred either while batting, or running the bases. You could try a load management system like the do in the NBA and limit them to 4 games in the field per week and at least one game off per week, and try to get 120 games out of them. However, I don't know if that's even going to help at this point. The track record shows they are both injury prone players.

I hope both of these guys somehow find the fountain of youth, and challenge for the Comeback Player of the Year Award, but that would be an extreme abnormality at this point. So, you need to build depth. Which I think was attempted this year, but even the depth either greatly under performed, or got injured as well. There's 3 good teams in the AL West now. I don't see any of them taking a step back next season unless they are decimated by injuries.

Then there’s Yamamoto.

Yamamoto allowed a large number of earned runs in the post-season games. Even good pitchers can have bad stretches, and  he is no exception.

(X below) On October 18, in one of the games of the playoffs to participate in the Japan Series
7.0 IP, 10 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 9 K

On October 28, in the game 1 of the Japan Series
5.2 IP, 10 H, 7 ER, 1 BB, 7 K

Not a problem halos never in playoffs.

How has he done in post-season games in previous years?

You are right.  Even good pitchers have bad stretches.

The Orix Buffaloes, to which Yamamoto belongs, recently advanced to the post-season in 2021 and 2022.

2021
In the playoffs (NPB calls it the "Climax Series"), which will compete for the right to participate in the Japan Series, he pitched in one game and won a shutout with four hits and no walks.

In the Japan Series, he appeared in games 1 and 6 as a starting pitcher. He pitched 15 innings over two games with 20 strikeouts and two runs allowed.
Game 1: 25 BF, 6.0 IP, 5 H, 0 HR, 2 BB, 0 HBP, 9 K, 1 ER
Game 6: 35 BF, 9.0 IP, 6 H, 0 HR, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 11 K, 1 ER

2022
He started the one game of the Climax Series and pitched with eight scoreless innings.
(YouTube) Highlights on Oct. 12, 2022

In the Japan Series, he started in Game 1, but left the mound in the begining of 5th inning with injuring his side, giving up 4 runs and being the losing pitcher.
Game 1: 17 BF, 4.0 IP, 4 H, 2 HR, 1 BB, 0 HBP, 4 K, 4 ER

-----

Yamamoto won the Sawamura Award for the third consecutive year, which is equivalent to the Cy Young Award.

Here is young player that was mentioned last off season on AW Vidal Brujan. Get him cheap

He’s out of options next year, so yeah, he probably will be cheap.

He also might not be able to hit MLB pitching.

In game 6 of the Japan Series, Yamamoto pitched 9 complete innings with 14 strikeouts and 1 earned run.  Yamamoto allowed just two home runs in the 2023 regular season. The 1 earned run of this game was third home run this year.
