Assuming he's out for the year, he's played a total of 237 games the last three seasons, or 48.8% of team games. In 2017-20 it was 80.7%, while in 2012-16--after his permanent call-up to the majors--it was about 98%.

So we have three phases of his career:

2012-16: 98% of games played

2017-20: 81% of games played

2021-23: 49% of games played

Furthermore, from 2012-21 he averaged 9.8 fWAR per 162 games played. Over the last two seasons, it has dropped to 7.3.

^The point being, Trout is more expendable, but...as has been discussed, who will take him? I have argued that if someone wants him and his whole contract, the Angels should go for it and go all-in on a youth rebuild. But that won't happen, and I'd much rather see him stick around and be the elder statesman for a young team.

I’ve posted elsewhere that Trout is simply not clutch, in no way is he clutch. If something like control of the clubhouse tv remote was on the line, Trout would strike out.  Yeah, his first 8 or 9 seasons it’s a no-brainer, but these past few seasons?  He’s good to go yard when the game is decided and there’s no one on base.
let another team take on the huge contract with a player who’s best years are in the books… for a change.
