Angels’ Offensive Struggles vs. pitches 96+ MPH

I stumbled upon this and found it to be interesting:

The Angels offense gets exposed by elite velocity, more than all but two other teams.

Broken down by Angels’ hitters:

The main culprits have been the middle infielders, but it’s concerning to see Rendon, Walsh, and Ward also towards the bottom.

The Angels offense is also just bad against fastballs in general, as they are 24th in MLB with a -30.7 run value against fastballs.

 

What this tells me is that this offseason, the Angels need to target players who can hit velocity and fastballs in general.

This is bad. Like non competitive bad. Get by Trout and Ohtani and just about everyone else gets a 97mph pitch from the bullpen in late innings and always with 2 strikes.

We could try having Ohtani and Trout where the other guys' jersey and a disguise late in games.... throw off the scouting report.

I think having Ohtani masquerading as Adell would be difficult.  They seem to be different heights which would obviously give it away.

I think the Angels have been exposed to  pitches of all speeds this year. The strikeouts should be enough to back it up.

They will manage to avoid ultimate humiliation.

1500Ks puts them 95 behind the most Ks by AL team (2019 Tigers) and 96 behind the most Ks by MLB team (2021 Cubs).

Only 6 games left, would need to average 16 Ks to tie the Cubs.

OK, what would cause this? I thought that all major leaguers can hit fastballs. Doesn't it matter when you decide to swing? Are the Yanks/Dodgers really have a faster bat speed than us?

The whole team appeared to be guessing slider most of the time, which is why they were caught looking so much it seems like.  But also there are specific swing mechanics that one must have to square up high heat, that the Angels haven’t adapted to.
