Could it be the catchers?

Recommended Posts

I was just thinking about Trout getting pissed at Peguero for tipping pitches and wondering why the fuck our catchers (and coaches) can see that shit happening?  With the blowpen giving up the lead 15 of 31 opportunities, how much can we pin on the catchers calling bad pitches? I know the pen is awful, but can we put any of the blame on the catchers? a 52% save percentage is laughable.

Uhm....a good coaching staff would identify it and help the player fix it. A good organization would do it before the player pitched in the majors.  An organization with good scouting would already know which pitchers tip pitches at every level of development.

Trout was able to see more from behind than a catcher sees from the front. The catcher can't see the grip or the way a pitcher maneuvers his fingers for specific pitches. He can't see the hand or ball in the glove.  And in a crouch his angle of view is reduced

As well, a catcher is thinking about location, the type of pitch called, the count, base runners if any, the stance of the batter, what's the setup in the infield. His  primary pre pitch focus isn't on watching body language.

Trout has less to focus on pitch by pitch. In center field he has a full view of the pitchers wind up and body mechanics. The fact that he noticed something says a lot about his attention to detail.

I’d like to agree with you, but Gubi saw it from the booth.

The beer vendor in right field saw it. So did the infant sucking on his mom’s tit behind home plate. Hell, even the pilot flying over the stadium saw it.

Yay!
