If he just sits and/or signs with another club, the Angels will still owe him his salary (minus the league minimum if he signs with someone else). Now if he elects retirement, he would forgo the money he is due unless the Angels renegotiate his contract like the Orioles and Chris Davis did to free up money for the current year.

That is what I thought, so he is not retiring in the next 6 months. I think with his daughters health is will not sign with anyone. Someone would have signed him by now.
