Eppler to Mets….

Dipoto was just the wrong fit here with Arte and Scioscia. Doesn't matter who was at fault. That setup was just doomed to fail based off each individual's own egos and way of running things.

Eppler, I think, in hindsight will be seen as being a really great GM who fulfilled his role more than was apparent. Sure, we all wanted to see the Angels win and will point to his record as to being a "failure", but with a greater lens of time, the work he did in rebuilding the farm, getting the team out of the dark ages and more into analytics, acquiring Ohtani, locking up Trout, his drafting...it will be a crucial part of the architecture if not immediately, further down the line.

Agreed. Im not sure how anyone could have worked a miracle during his tenure. Bad contracts, no farm. Tomny johns like a muhfuggah.

Anyone you put there would have struggled.

I actually think he's a good fit there. The stuff he did didn't always make sense , but he was key in building our farm system, got us Ohtani, extended Trout, and generally kept the Angels from doing anything too stupid.  The worst long-term thing he did was the Upton deal, which isn't even in the top 5 worst contracts the Angels have done in the past decade. He might only last 4-5 seasons again, but if he can just stabilize the culture, draft well, and not make any major mistakes, it will probably be worth it for them.

Dipoto always was a douche, and he still is, but after being a colossal failure and organizational destroyer with the Angels, he grew into passable GM with the Mariners. He still makes really stupid trades, but can also pull off a smart one too every once in a while. His FA acquisitions are shitty, but he's not alone there. And he's done an admirable job rebuilding their farm, though it isn't nearly as strong as it's given credit for.

Eppler is a good guy, a smart guy but he was too conservative with the Angels and ended up making moves in desperation because of misreading the market. But he did a great job with the farm, and creating an atmosphere that made Shohei want to come here and Trout stay.  For the Mets, he'll probably prove more adept in FA.

And for the Mets, they know with Eppler, he's a quality person. Hasn't groped anyone he wasn't supposed to or leveraged his position for sex, so that's good.

If Eppler can put together a better group of major league scouts he'll have a lot more success.  That was the biggest nit.  He did a terrible job when he finally had a bit of money to spend.  Upton, Cozart, Harvey, Allen, Cahill, Espinosa, Maybin, Revere, Valbuena, Nolasco, Chavez, Lucroy, Bour, Teheran.  That's a pretty awesome list of how to waste a couple hundred mil.   Otherwise he did a really nice job.

But damn if this franchise wasn't headed for a black hole when he got here yet was still essentially forced to try and keep the team somewhat competitive.  And even with his failures, he left the team in much better shape than he started with an actual shot to be a playoff team.

Kind of ironic in that his “expertise” was supposed to be finding value in major league talent and that ended up being the area in which he did not do well as GM.

he actually did a solid job of that for the pen which he hardly spent a dime on in 5 years.

Yeah, the problem was half the good bullpen finds he’d get would wind up pressed into rotation duty.

The number of injuries the Angels had to endure was nuts. I hope Eppler kicks ass in NY. Be interesting to see if we match up with the Mets on any deals.

Really?  like who?  The only one I can think of that probably should have been in the pen but was forced to start was Pena.  Maybe JC Ramirez?

I was thinking more of the Robles, Parker, David Hernandez,  Noe, Buttrey, Mayers types.
