Saw this on a Braves page on Facebook. Unfortunate, and it screws up the rotation big time. Morton was projected to start at least two games, maybe three if the series goes seven games.

Can you imagine the adrenaline that he had going for him to finish out the inning AND come back for the next one, then getting the first out? He had to have been feeling no pain because he was starting Game One of the World Fucking Series!

But. man, getting three more outs after taking that liner off his leg...

Puts Schilling and his bloody Sox to shame.

In 1967 Bob Gibson suffered a broken fibula when hit by a line drive off of Roberto Clemente's bat, pitched to three more batters, than left the game. He returned after eight weeks and had a wonderful World Series with three complete-game wins.

Bob Gibson was a special breed...he was superhuman. He's a category unto himself.

In 1935, Washington Senators pitcher Bobo Newsom was hit by a line drive off of Earl Avrill which fractured his knee. The manager checked on him and the story is told two ways.

One is Bobo told him his knee was broke and manager Bucky Harris asked if he wanted to come out and Bobo's response was, “You kidding me? I said it was broke, I didn’t say I was dead.” He pitched a complete game but lost 4-5. It wasn't until after the game at the hotel they finally summoned a doctor because the knee had swollen so badly he couldn't walk. X-rays later at the hospital confirmed the knee was broken. He missed 8 weeks.

The other story, told by Bobo later was he indeed told Harris it was broken but he was told to stay in pitching. Every inning he came off the mound he went to the dugout to sit down, rubbing his knee and told everyone that passed by his knee was broke but they laughed him off because he was still walking and pitching.

Bobo Newsom once pitched a complete game with a broken jaw as well. The year following his knee fracture, on what was called the Presidential Opener, on a bunt down the third base line the Senators third baseman made a awkward throw that hit Newsom square in the jaw, fracturing it. Again he wouldn't come out of the game. "Whenever President Roosevelt comes to see Ol' Bobo pitch," he said, "Ol' Bobo ain't going to disappoint him." He won that game 1-0.

His first World Series his father came to watch him pitch. Newsom pitched a complete game winning 7-2 and a day later his father died at the hotel of heart failure. He went the funeral the following day, returned to the team and won game 3 as a complete game shutout. Game seven was another complete game but lost 2-1. A total of 26 innings pitched and allowed only 4 runs while grieving the death of his father.

He was a very interesting but forgotten character in baseball.
