Angels select Janson Junk, release Jose Iglesias

This is partly the reason that we are stuck in this rut.  Instead of trading Iglesias for any type of minor league depth piece, we release him and recover nothing.

Now, someone else signs him to finish out the year for the prorated portion of the ML minimum, and the Angels pay the balance.  Brilliant.

It is hard to fathom how Iglesias couldn't have been used even as a throw in on one of the deadline deals.

Does anyone know whether the Angels can place players on the injured list in AAA (such as Griffin Canning or Taylor Ward) on the 60-day IL to clear a 40-man roster space?

Canning's out for the season, but he was optioned, got hurt in AAA, and then was placed on the AAA IL. He hasn't been placed on the 60-day IL yet, despite the Angels needing numerous 40-man roster spots lately, some I'm wondering if maybe that's not allowed? @Jeff Fletcher?

I am pretty sure that’s not allowed, although I’m sure the players would be fine with it because they’d get major league pay and service time.

It is my, possibly limited, understanding that when a 40-man roster player is optioned down, plays in the Minors, and then they get injured, the team can choose to place them on the Major League IL or the Minor League IL, at their discretion. As Jeff pointed out if they decide to utilize the Major League IL, then the player gets Major League pay and service time. If they are on the Minor League IL, Major League service time does not accrue, but the player must remain on the 40-man.

In the case of Canning, who is at 1.153 years (1 year, 153 days) of Major League service time, the Halos front office appears to be favoring the suppression of his service time, so that he does not exceed 2 years of Major League service time, thus retaining the extra year of control over him. Note that Ward is at 1.065 years (1 year, 65 days), for reference. Also, Sandoval is at 0.167 years (167 days).

Until you look at his performance this year.

When the lineup card is delivered to home plate, do you think the Angel coach will say, “Hey take a look at my junk.” While pointing to the card.

Mayfield is a decent bench player. Maybe. Can essentially be a utility guy, but he doesn't play good defense. He also can't hit.

He has also been putrid every year but this one. He had a 26 OPS+ with Houston. Twenty. Six. And it was a SIX FUCKING TEEN OPS+ with Seattle before coming here.

If he's the starting shortstop next year we are fucked.

He’s never hit much until this year but he is a good defender…
