Having a cool narrative is considered part of MVP. MVP is not considered the same as best overall player. (I think Trout should have won by either criteria but I digress...)

anyway, back to Kendrick. Look at the Win Probability Added. The fact that his blunders tend to occur in high leverage situatiosn means that he consistently hurts the team a lot more than his context-independent numbers would suggest. I think that Scioscia's management style does play into this but nevertheless, here's the 5 qualified Angels' batters based on WPA:

Mark Trumbo 1.18

Albert Pujols 1.16

Mike Trout 1.07

Howie Kendrick -0.03

Josh Hamilton -1.43

Good point, he hits well with RISP, but not in the clutch situations. However, I still don't fully blame Howie. If he was placed in a position where he came up more often as lead off, he would be much more effective as a batter. Put Kendrick in the #9 and Hamilton #8, giving the best chance at him coming up with nobody on.
