It looked like a business decision. He invited speculation and criticism.

He didn't tell the team, he didn't tell anybody, just opted out. Even Maddon had no idea what was going on.

Obviously if we had known he had a mental breakdown or any kind of health problem, things would have been different.

As fans it's our prerogative to question the motives of a player who quits as Simmons did.

Do we know for sure that Maddon and everyone else in the organization had no idea why Simmons opted out?

My bad now that most of the facts are out there.  Mental illness is a very scary thing.  

So, a sincere apology to Andrelton Simmons and his family.  My best to him going forward.

Who says the journalist wasn't honest? If Maddon knew and didn't pass the information on then Ardaya correctly reported what he knew.

Maddon is not under any obligation to release private conversations between him and his players, coaches or superiors. If Simmons had confided in him the reasons for opting out it also means he asked for the privacy to not release those reasons. 

You only get what is reasonably your right to know. In this case it wasn't until Simmons felt it was time to discuss the subject. He, Maddon and Ardaya are not under contract to you.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, Maddon and Simmons are under no obligation to let the public know.  We already know that.

The natural follow-on is that random people on an internet forum are under no obligation to assume Simmons had a valid reason for leaving the team when nothing is publicly stated.  Right?  Or are they under contract to you?

Who is the better for all this thread's bashing of the latter group?
