Under the premise that everything is self-serving politics, I doubt the Dems impeach if they control the Senate. 

Impeaching him is a gamble and it won't pay off. They're pushing the Senate so hard on doing a fair trial, not because they want Trump removed or that they have any optimism that he'd be removed but because voters are stupid. Dems can go to their nutjob base and say "We did our part! The GOP is crooked!" Then they can go to the moderate/swing districts and claim "our system worked! We didn't want to impeach but we were beholden to the constitution and the Senate found him not guilty. It all worked out. America is great!"

Interesting move by the House Dems.

Not sure what happened to, "we can't wait for the election, we can't wait for the courts," etc.

Obviously they didn't go to all this trouble just to have Trump acquitted in 30 seconds. Then for the next 11 months Trump goes around saying, "I was acquitted and the Dems are idiots!" So they'll be satisfied with "Trump was impeached but not acquitted" because there was no trial in the Senate. That would just prove though, that there was never any real concern that Trump is a danger to our democracy or whatever, and the whole thing was just a stunt.

Maybe the Dems are worried that the Bidens will be put on trial.

Who knows.
