With Thaiss, I'll put it like this. With how pretty his swing is, and how hard he hits the ball, and his use of the entire field and his pitch recognition, I cannot figure out for the life of me why his numbers in the minors aren't MUCH better.

I truly believe that at some point, if given a full season (a big if) he will hit .280 and hit 40 doubles.

If he were simply a 1B, I think those chances would be less. He doesn't hit for enough power to justify playing full time with the depth they have on hand and the caliber hitters sitting on the waiver wire every winter. But now that he's shown he can play 3B....we'll see.

He wouldn't be the first to see the numbers grow at the MLB level.   Kendrys' numbers weren't THAT great in the minors.  Solid for SLC, but not great

Please stop with the Mattingly love like you guys are all myopic Yankee fans. After his age 27 season Matthingly was just an average player. He ended his career with a pedestrian 125 OPS+ line, not even the Hall of Very Good eligible.

He's the Derek Jeter of the 80s.

This

Age 29-35 seasons (1990-1995), his OPS was only around .750.   Decent to solid, but not anything more

He was very good from 1984-1989 (six straight years an All-Star), and that's the extent of it.

As of 2012...

"Your average Hall of Famer hit .303 with an on-base percentage of .376, and a slugging percentage of .461. That’s an OPS of .837 with an OPS+ of 128."

Mattingly:

.307 BA

.358/.471/.830

127 OPS+

Plus, 9 GGs
