Why I’m Optimistic About this Team

Recommended Posts

If the Angels are going to go on a run, they need to do it now. Of the AL teams with a realistic chance at the playoffs, the Angels have had the most games against teams over .500 (47). Only Houston has had more (51)

After the 2 coming up against Cincy, they have 11 in a row against teams over .500 before the All-Star Break. That will put them at 58 games against teams over .500 and 34 games against teams under .500.

Coming out of the All-Star Break, they only play 13 games against teams over .500 in their next 35 games. This is when they have to make a run.

The last 35 games in the schedule are brutal. Since they'll be done with Seattle on July 21 all of their divisional games after that will be against Houston, Texas & Oakland. Their non-divisional games aren't much better. Boston, Cleveland, Tampa Bay, & the Yankees. The only team currently below .500 they'll play in those 35 games is 3 against the White Sox in Chicago and the Sox have been hovering just below .500 all year.

Here's the other teams and the number of games they've played against teams over .500 so far:

NYY 27

MIN 28

TBR 42

CLE 33

TEX 33

BOS 39

OAK 37

CHW 38

Don't forget that many of the games with the M's came when they went 13-2 early on.   Those could almost be included in the number of games against .500+ teams.

Anyway, first goal is to finally finish a season over .500 for the first time since 2015.    Last time they finished under .500 four straight seasons was 1971-1977.

Then, next big goal is adding Gerrit Cole, to finally give this younger staff a true #1/#2 to look up to.

It’s going to be hard to go on runs with the inconsistency of the pitching staff, but maybe we find lightning in a bottle for this year and sneak into the second wildcard.

Again, my optimism is pegged on the fact that we are seeing a legitimate youth movement this year with players that can make a difference. This next off-season will be Eppler’s biggest one and he must do well in FA and on the trade market.

If we get gerrit cole, @Taylor will have to become carrot permanently going forward.
