Is Pavement the best rock band of all time?

Recommended Posts

The best rock band of all time?  Most of the bands mentioned in this thread are not even on the list save for the Stones, Beatles and Who, of which I only really like one on that list.

That said, I believe that one of the all-time best rock bands was "The Band", not simply because they had stand out material of their own, but they could, and were willing to, play second fiddle to some stellar lead performers and ALWAYS made the lead better as a result.

If you get an opportunity, I highly recommend checking out "The Last Waltz".  It may be the single greatest concert ever captured on film.

The Band is in my Top 5 of all-time. All of their albums up to The Last Waltz are on par with anything. It Makes No Difference is one of the greatest songs ever written. I'm always bummed that more people haven't listened to them (other than the radio hits). They had three legit lead singers and they could all play every instrument. If you haven't yet, check out Levon's book, This Wheel's On Fire. The part when he talks about the last night of Richard Manuel's life, when they were hanging out in their crappy motel talking, is heartbreaking.
