Gameday Thread: 5/20 Rays @ Angels. Pujols off-day. Trout DH

Recommended Posts

Great effort today by the Angels.  This game had a different feel than the others, you could tell everybody really wanted the win. Trout was amazing, Kole made a huge difference with the dive and the walk.  Bullpen came through! :)

If you go back and read the beginning of this thread there's an awful lot of whining about Ohtani's pitching and the fact that the game was over when it was 1-0.

Great game by Ohtani and the Angel offense scored enough to win and that's all that matters.

It was a 5-game losing streak and a bad week. THAT WAS THE WEEK THAT WAS.  It's over, let it go. Like that show in the early 1960s.

fair point, Ohtani is good no doubt

but his splitter is A+, his fastball has been disappointing

I tend to look more so at fangraphs/analytics and their analysis - I agree that Ohtani is a good pitcher with good stuff but his fastball doesn't rise as much as anticipated so it's not a Kimbrel/Chapman FB where it will eat hitters up. It needs to be located in the corners.

Dont be enslaved to quantitative analysis.

There are more to stars than just raw numbers.

fair point but my dream job when I was in university was to work for baseball prospectus. I have all the editions dating back to 2004, it's the one book I buy every year. I worked as a CPA for PWC before moving to the finance sector where I currently work today. If an opportunity were to come up where I could work for a baseball analytics department and still make ~ my salary + live in Southern California (the hard part) I would jump all over it.
