Angels could be in on Kevin Maitan

Second Base

Not sure if it's been touched on or not but Kevin Maitan's development has hit a pretty hard stand still. Scouts are pretty torn about if it's culture shock or if it's a real problem but he's physically tapped out at 17 and his swing has gotten VERY ugly over the last year. It could be a development issue or it could be a mechanical issue adapting to his larger frame but many in the industry do not consider him a "Top 100" prospect anymore but instead, a physical project with projectable tools (i.e. every organization has one of these guys).

Well I think regardless, that's one deal the Angels were a finalist for that they probably should've pulled the trigger on.  Getting MCab for Maybin and Andrew Miller was a steal for Detroit, and so was that first contract extension he signed.  This last one he signed looks like it might be worse than Pujols' contract.

Agree.

Hey! We've finally hooked the original Taylor Ward into the AW.com Forums!

You're absolutely right though this hasn't been discussed. Maitan's luster has definitely worn off in some circles.

Yeah, it's just hard to write a kid off at 17.  These physical projects rarely work out (Junior Lake or Jorge Soler come to mind). Every once in a while you get a Lorenzo Cain out of it.

Am I mistaken but isn't this revisionist history.  It is my understanding it was Maimi that blew the deal and reneged on an agreement with Arte.

I believe that's correct - I think we had an agreement in principle, but Miami approached Detroit with a proposal they thought would be better - when Detroit accepted, they didn't even give us a chance to improve - they got who they wanted - they thought Maybin and Miller were going to be stars -  they were both Top 10 prospects they thought they could build around, cheaply.  Wood was still top 10 then - but he was always considered risky.

I don't think Miami wanted more established players from us, they wanted high-end prospects under club control for a long time.

I thought Kendrick and Wood were the centerpieces of that trade.
