Got royally screwed with a 4 shot penalty today as she was walking to the 12th hole. Apparently, she misplaced a ball on the 17th green yesterday (a 2-shot penalty) but no one caught it. Signed her score card (which was now an incorrect scorecard) and incurred another 2-shot penalty. They told her about this as she was walking off the 11th green to tee off at the 12th.

The broadcast team wasn't happy at all about this being allowed some 26 hours after it happened, nor were other players (even Tiger tweeted about it). At what point do golf officials on all of the tours draw the line on letting viewers contact them about stuff like this? Or should the viewers continue to be allowed to call in/email about infractions they see that aren't picked up, for the integrity of the game? Or should there be a reasonable time limit on allowing this to happen?

To her credit, Lexi went from a 2-shot lead in the final round of a major to being behind by 2. She rallied and regained the lead, but just bogeyed 16 to fall back into a tie.

Thoughts?

A, she is hot.  B, she is hot.  C, she is still hot.

But around D, incorrect scorecard should not be a penalty for a administrative change.  Now, golf is an honor sport, and you have to enforce the honor code.  Again, by the description, she should be given the initial 2 stroke penalty.  But because it was an administrative action after the scorecards were signed and accepted, she should not be penalized more.  And if she is going to be penalized more, I volunteer to do so on monday after the tourney ends.

This is ridiculous. The scorecard was correct when she signed it. To impose two penalties for the same act is crazy.

fans should not be allowed to be the police of the sport. if it's not caught when it happens, and especially if it's something so insanely inconsequential as this, BFD.

both the PGA and LPGA need to put limits on what fans can do in these kinds of cases. what happened today should never be allowed to happen again.

pga is changing their rules in 2019. not going to eliminate this, but sounds like they are going to limit the review process.

part of what makes this bullshit is that only certain players or players on the leaderboard are followed and televised. the fact everyone isn't televised equally makes this pretty weak.

can you imagine other sports where fans call in to alter an outcome? just nuts.

This is a really great point Brandon.

someone on the broadcast was talking about this very point, that the leaders (and only the leaders) come under much more scrutiny because of their tv time. they suggested having a tour official in the tv broadcast truck to be able to review things that may be an infraction, which seems reasonable.

anything that is questionable needs to be dealt with as immediately as possible, and it should not be at the impetus of what viewers see on tv. the players and tour officials do a terrific job of policing themselves and it needs to be left in their hands, not yours and mine.

this became more prominent with dustin johnson many years ago at a major and tiger at the masters. i just have a real problem with joe blow calling in and dictating results, not to mention their intentions....friends and family of a fellow competitor? betting on someone else in the field?

and then how it's handled. she originally signed an accurate scorecard, but then you hit her for that penalty too many hours after the fact, which no one caught. it's a little of the archaic and irrational nonsense you see "purists" have. the new rulebook coming out in 2019 is going to curb a lot of this as there will be provisions to not dock someone for infractions that do not have a competitive advantage....if i remember correctly, tiger's master debacle was him putting the ball too far back, which is not an advantage.

i'm ok with retroactive adjustments.....penalties or fines for soccer players diving or throwing elbows, racism or unseen conduct in football or basketball, etc. but calling in 24 hours later and changing the course and results of play is just poor.

deadspin did an article about the episode and i think they mentioned that the chick that won wasn't even televised to be observed on any of her shots, placements, etc.
