the yankees have a farm system and had reasonable incumbents at pretty much every position but 2b where they went out and traded for a young, controlled player with upside.  

 

they've got a bunch of expiring contracts over the next two years and actual minor leaguers that can replenish their needs.

The Skanks are finally reverting to what they did in the early-mid 1990s.

We know what success they had after that through the 2000s.

I haven't necessarily flip flopped, although the politicians sure are a great role model for that.

 

I still prefer a solid farm with STRATEGIC key FA/trade acquisitions, that aren't already beginning to decline.  

I still say that Cespedes could have been that; no draft pick lost, LF weakness fixed, only age 30 and not declining.

But since Cespedes went back to the Mets, it's not a total drag.

 

In other words, I want to see some sort of game plan that is consistent enough, and looks to the future so that the depth will always be there for replacing players through trades or FA departures.

The clean peanut way isn't bad in the short term.   But let's not make it the major way of fielding a team.

It's an inexorable drift in to mediocrity and eventual ineptitude.

Acquiring declining players for big dollars is a good way to reach mediocrity.
