https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/nidhiprakash/puerto-rico-hurricane-funeral-assistance-fema

In response to an earlier letter from Warren, Brock Long, director of FEMA, wrote on Aug. 14 that as of July 30, his agency had received 2,431 requests for funeral assistance from Puerto Ricans related to the hurricane — they approved just 75 of them, meaning 97% have either been rejected or have not received a decision almost a year after Maria hit the island.

So a person who has a family member die from cancer gets nothing, but a hurricane gets you help?

Well if one person dies from cancer generally the community can come together and help that family out.  But if the entire community is devastated... ?

Um yeah, that doesn't happen often.  Perhaps in close knit communities and churches but I would think that is about it.

I think you get what I mean.  This is just one more way of saying one person's death is more important than another's.

No, no, no, no.

FEMA just acts like an insurance for when natural disasters happen.  We have home insurance, car insurance, and life insurance.  Unfortunately many of these policies don't cover "Acts of god".  That is where FEMA comes in.

You can get hurricane insurance, just like earthquake insurance that covers "acts of God."

Only about 50% of houses in the U.S. territory are covered by policies that protect against wind damage, which is far less than is typical across the U.S.

A family friend sells insurance, he said earthquake insurance is useless because if the kind of earthquake it covers were to occur, everyone would need it, and they wouldn't be able to pay out. It's the same thing that happened with flood insurance in Houston last year.
