"Southern California assistant football coach Dave Nichol died Friday in McKinney, Texas. He was 45.

A person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press that Nichol had cancer. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the cause of death wasn't being publicly disclosed.

USC head coach Lincoln Riley hired Nichol in December as his inside wide receivers coach and associate head coach for offense. Riley announced four days ago that Nichol was leaving the team to focus on an unspecified personal medical matter."

The snippet you provided didn't state he had prior knowledge before becoming the assistant coach in December.  Just that he left for an undisclosed medical manner.

With all of the talent on the roster, if you don't go to the playoffs, Riley should be fired.

The university and its handling (or non-handling) of Clay Helton has significantly diminished my passion for USC Football.  I'll still follow and am excited for Lincoln Riley, but I no longer plan events on Saturdays exclusively around Trojan football.

That's a good way of putting it!  Additionally, the university has made it more difficult to tailgate before games, and parking is a nightmare again.

Honestly, if USC doesn’t find some way to let their fans down in heartbreaking fashion later in the season, they’re underachieving. We need good ol’ inexplicable choke job out of nowhere USC back. Also, some sort of scandal would be appreciated.

As for scandals, I'm sure there is something lurking, but they have been purging the old guard for a while.
