Feinstein doesn't really understand the Interwebs

Recommended Posts

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Ca.) wants to remove The Anarchist Cookbook from the internet— you know, that notorious DIY bomb-making manual that has been around since the 1970s, is still available in print, the one you can buy on Amazon and find literally thousands of places online and offline for a pittance.

'Mr. and Mrs. America, Turn Those Guns Books In'

The book in question is nearly worthless, but come and try to take it, bitch.

I don't get these kinds of fantasies. Do you really picture her coming to your door and asking for it?

She just advocated for the banning of a book.

"These documents are not, in my view, protected by the First Amendment and should be removed from the Internet."

She's making a pretty serious threat of violence here, isn't she? She isn't asking for people to voluntarily turn in their copies of the book or delete the copies from their computer or server. "Should be removed" is a clear threat.

Is she making an idle threat? Sure, she would never get away with it. That doesn't mean that threats against fundamental rights shouldn't be taken seriously and opposed. She made herself clear. If she thought she could get away with it she would indeed try to take this book away from people by force.

There are mountains of historical precedent for the banning of books, in the US (by localities) and around the world. It isn't "fantasy".

Actually he did answer pretty plainly.

"Is she making an idle threat?  Sure, she would never get away with it"

"Do you really picture her coming to your door and asking for it?"

Where did he answer that question?

Fair enough.  I think he actually answered it more at the end when he said it wasn't fantasy.  And, the part where he implied violence on Feinstein's part.  Don't get me wrong, I think she's a dope of the highest order but I also didn't get any sense of violence from her.  Seems like a bit of projection to me.

i've often wondered why the anarchists cookbook is allowed to be printed. there are limits to free speech, and a book that shows people how to build bombs would seem to push those limits significantly.

Threatening violence is exactly what governments do.

Do people pay their "taxes" because they want to? If they didn't pay would governments just say "well, it's okay, we'll get you next time"? People pay because it is made clear to them that the alternative is much worse. The government threatens to steal even more of their property or throw the person in a cage if they don't. It's called coercion. It's really effective.

Do any of the thousands of new "laws" dreamed up every year not have a threat attached to them? Governments threaten violence to get what they want.
