Things more effective than the contact play

I'm pretty sure when there are no outs and the IF is back to give you the run for the DP, you have to go on contact to force the defense to make a decision - get the DP and give up a run or go home and get only one out. Otherwise you can let them get the DP and you still don't score.

I assume the Hamilton play is the one we're talking about.

Freese just hit it to the exact wrong place. Nothing you can do about it.

I'm sure it's an effective strategy when used sparingly, but since our opponents can pretty much bank on Scioscia's use of this play with a runner at third and less than two outs, it makes it easy to defend. Just throw home.

You could not run. With no outs, there's no reason to run on a ground ball unless there's a sure chance you'll score. If Hamilton stays on a ground ball that gave him absolutely no chance to score (other than the miniscule chance a routine throw gets by the catcher), the Angels would still have had a runner on 3rd with less than two outs.

No if he doesn't run they get a double play.

This specific play is not even debatable. It's how you play. It's like debating whether you should send the runners with 2 outs and a 3-2 count.

The contact play is optional, for example, when there is a runner at third and no outs or one out, but no DP situation.

I'd there had been no one on first in that situation and Hamilton would have been thrown out, you would be right to question it.
