The break away republics have been de facto separated from Ukraine since 2014.  Official as far as Russia is concerned now.  Germany and France, the EU more broadly are saying that the recognition doesn’t trigger automatically sanctions which is unsurprising.    The Germans in particular *need* the nord stream 2 pipeline.  The Russians badly want it as well.  To me, this is the main reason that I don’t think the ww2 style full on invasion of Ukraine will happen.  We’ll see what the Ukrainians do now.
