Could Trout become the greatest baseball player ever?

Other things to consider. I think back then, strike zone was from the chest to just below the knees. And spitballs and doctored balls were pretty common. Not sure how often they changed balls back then either. Just the quality of the balls back then would make a big difference. Heck, it made a big difference that one season when balls were wound so tight, that they were flying out of stadiums.

That's very true.

I was listening to a BP podcast a few weeks back and they discussed this. Sam Miller really thinks that Babe Ruth would be nowhere close to the player he was back then if he were to play today.

I don't think anybody really has the answer to this.

Comparing players across eras is basically meaningless; it is easy to say that Trout is better than Ruth because of the improvements in the game, but we cannot know how good Ruth would have been if he was playing today. What we CAN do is look at how good a player is relative to his competition, and certain Trout is not as dominant as Ruth was, or as dominant as Bonds was in 2001-04. But he's pretty dominant, and has been significantly better (according to WAR) than everyone else in the game over the last two years.
