Major League Baseball is withdrawing its proposal for a new bidding system with Japan, making it uncertain whether prized pitcher Masahiro Tanaka will be on the market this offseason.

 

MLB chief operating officer Rob Manfred said Japanese officials had not acted quickly enough on MLB's proposal for a new agreement and that a new proposal will be forwarded.

 

"We warned them, told them if this sat too long, there could be shifting winds out there, and suffice it to say there are shifting winds," Manfred said.

5 years/$130 million with posting fee is too much for a guy debuting over here, even if he was Japan's best pitcher for 2 seasons.

If this happens, you have to wonder how much more expensive a pitcher like Garza or even Vargas is going to get. 

 

MLBTradeRumors is saying Ricky Nolasco is currently getting 3 and 4 year offers.  I hope this doesn't make Vargas too expensive.

5:18pm: The posting arrangement isn't in jeopardy of falling apart, Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News reports (all Twitter links). The issue amongst the owners was that some small-market owners wished for posting fees to be counted against the luxury tax. This couldn't happen, however, unless the collective bargaining agreement was changed, and the MLBPA informed the owners that they weren't going to re-open the CBA.

Well maybe just a bit, my ass was feeling a little sluggish and I needed to purge it.

The posting fee is being rumored to be as high as $75 million, after which it just takes 5 years/$55 million to get to $130 million.
