Google today announced a new Internet-to-television device called Chromecast

 

A lot less money, smaller, more content, works with phones and can turn your TV into a smart TV

Tic toc, Time Warner, Directv, etc.  Love it!  Hopefully, gizmos like this will expedite ala carte programming.

And at $35, I can't wait for some reviews to come in.  So far, it sounds very interesting.

its google's answer to airplay (which is alone worth the price of apple tv), althought slightly different.

airplay streams stuff from device (ipad) to your tv over your network.

chromecast afaik streams stuff from the network with your device being the controller to it.

subtle difference.

 

the micro-usb power cord is gonna look stupid though (its not show in any PR pictures, but mentioned in light gray txt here: http://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/devices/chromecast/#youtube)

 

but the author doesnt mention the best part - HDMI-CEC (its the same thing as e.g. Viera Link on pannys or anynet+ on samsung).

you can turn on/off your TV with it and control other stuff eventually. so watching a youtube video and want it on the big screen, send it to chromecast and it'll turn on your TV and play it.

Panasonic has an air share type app for their newer TV's that works on Android/iOS and maybe PC but it is really crappy.  Chromecast seems pretty amazing.

its just a USB dongle with HDMI and 802.11.

probably costs $1 to make.

but yeah, great price for its albeit limited functionality.
