Could Downs or Frieri Be Attractive to the Pirates?

Recommended Posts

They need bullpen help with Grilli going down, and neither are signed here past season's end.

The Bucs should be pretty wealthy in their farm system, and they REALLY want to win now.
How about the Halos get a nice haul for a rental, instead of being taken for a haul.

Probably too much to hope for.

I get that Ernie is arb eligible after this season...but with the lack of trade chips, how else will the Halos ever rebuild with 1 to 1 moves?

They need to look at getting multiple players for the few pieces they have that are moveable.

Rumor has it that Brian Wilson is looking to try out for a team...he would need some minor league time to get game ready though, so probably not what the Bucs are looking for..
Maybe we could add him to Madson for next season's bullpen (sarcasm smilie)

Except the Angels need pitching and to unload payroll if possible.  They should be trying to trade guys from positions where they have depth (Trumbo, PB, Calhoun), guys coming off the books soon (Downs) or club friendly contracts (Howie/Aybar).  It makes little or no sense to trade a cheap reliever under club control for 3 more years when they need pitching unless they get a ridiculous offer.

The Pirates have a pretty excellent bullpen as is, even without Grilli for a few weeks.

I'd like to keep Frieri anyways, considering the club control we have for him.

They might have a different tune after a couple weeks of Melancon as their closer.

However, I'd MUCH rather trade Downs than Frieri, but I don't know if Downs would net much in return.

Agreed. I'd like to see what we'd get back in a Frieri deal. Many teams need a guy like him so they could overpay.

Relief pitchers are notoriously inconsistent. Take what you can get for a "closer" any time you can get a good haul. I saw that something like only 3 teams have the same closer they had 2 years ago. Other than Rivera few are good for more than a few seasons. I don't think Frieri is Rivera. If you can get a SP prospect for him do it in a second.
