Johnny Washington, who has been the Chicago Cubs’ assistant hitting coach for the past two seasons, has been hired as the Angels hitting coach, bringing to five the number of coaches officially hired to work under new manager Ron Washington.

The Angels have also hired Eric Young Sr. as third-base coach, Bo Porter as first-base coach, Ryan Goins as infield coach and Jerry Narron as catching coach. Narron was already a part of the organization, working in the minors.

Johnny Washington, a Long Beach native who is not related to Ron Washington, was a Padres hitting coach from 2017 to 2019. He was one of four candidates interviewed for the Angels’ managerial opening in 2019, when Joe Maddon was hired. In between working for the Padres and Cubs, Washington, 39, spent a season coaching in South Korea.

The Angels have at least three more roles to fill: pitching coach, assistant pitching coach/bullpen coach and assistant hitting coach. The Angels also could have two assistant hitting coaches.

It would probably behoove them to have two assistant pitching coaches in addition to two assistant hitting coaches.

That’s what a lot of teams are doing, since there’s so much information to break down and go through.

But they’ve never had two assistant pitching coaches, so it’s admittedly a stretch to think that they will now.
