I’ll preface this by noting that defensive metrics aren’t perfect, but the defensive metrics HATE Logan O’Hoppe:

-8 DRS

-6.6 FRM

Statcast:

-6 Runs overall

-5 Framing Runs

-3 Caught Stealing Above Average

Should we be concerned?

No put him at 1B

Sample size is the biggest issue here and the issue with defensive metrics in general.  The smaller the sample the harder it is to take the data seriously.  This it true in both directions think Peter Bourjos if you need a example going the other way.

For now the eye test tells us enough.  He's made some clueless mental errors, he's a bit more active behind the plate than he should be.  Wish Jose Molina was still around to work with him. Check back on the numbers after 1500-2000 or so defensive innings and you can start worrying or not worrying.

Going to Mathis wouldn't be such a bad idea.  At least he knows how to manage a game.

Nevin has made several errors in judgement that have cost the team games, like continuing to use Loup and Marte in games.

They are on the roster and in the bullpen, he had to use them at some point. Providing better talent would have made relief pitcher selection less of a game of Russian Roulette.

He was supposed to be paired up with Stassi and be an understudy. Instead he was paired with an under-understudy in Thaiss and had to sink or swim on his own as the primary until the shoulder blew up.

If the Angels were serious about moving his career forward they should have brought Suzuki in to mentor as he was healing from the shoulder surgery and given him more than two starts in the minors before putting him back into the lineup with a pitching staff that didn't know him or vice versa.

But this has become quite the clown show when it comes to preparing players for the tasks ahead.
