Last year Herget allowed a .480 OPS versus RHB.

If you want to look at generic "matchup" stats, you'll find that.

But if you dig deeper, you'll see that Herget throws a 75 mph curveball and a 90.5 mph fastball 55% of the time, both pitches that Springer and Bichette crush...

vs. curveballs below 80 mph:

Springer: .408 wOBA

Bichette: .451 wOBA

vs. fastballs 90-92 mph:

Springer: .434 wOBA

Bichette: .470 wOBA

According to Nevin Springer hit a Homer off him last year.

according to the actual data that you can easily look up on MLB.com or Baseball Savant, that isn't true.

If you search Matt Moore + George Springer + Homerun, there's only one result, and it's from 2018.

Then Nevin was mistaken.

Good old bad data. Now baseball gets to deal with an issue that tons of other industries have been dealing with for years.

And if you look at how Herget did facing Toronto, specifically Bichette, Springer and Vlad Jr last year they went hitless. He faced 10 Toronto batters and retired all 10.

Well, Herget did say he should have thrown a slider.

@Jeff Fletcher did anyone push back on Phil's comment that Herget was the best matchup in that spot?

He clearly wasn't. The top of the Jays' lineup crushes 90-92 mph fastballs and curveballs less than 80 mph.

He was also incorrectly citing a 2022 Springer HR off Moore as a reason to take out Moore. Moore never faced Springer in 2022. That HR was in 2018, when Moore hadn't made an effective transition to the bullpen.

I think Nevin was simply referring to Herget’s success against RHPs. He said a few times Herget is their best right on right guy, which he absolutely was last year.

Springer was 2-8 with a HR against Moore and 0-3 with 2 strikeouts against Herget.

I don't have a problem bringing in Herget where they did.   He's really the most obvious option to face tough RHers based on who's out there.  Estevez is pretty much your closer or at least someone you reserve for later in the game.  Maybe they start considering Wantz for those spots a bit more but that's still pretty dicey.  They really don't have that higher velo type guy to matchup vs. RHers in tough spots right now.  They've sort of painted themselves into this corner for now.  Four lefties in the pen means you've got to find out of they can get tough righties out in those pivotal spots at some point.

If Bichette goes yard vs. Moore then we'd pretty much be having the same conversation.

Ultimately I think we're gonna see that the pen just doesn't have enough talent from a sheer stuff perspective.  And to change that means guys like Joyce, Bachman and Rodriguez getting in there.  But that also means dealing with the inconsistency of rookies.

Yikes! Sounds like the bullpen is going to be their downfall this year
