MLB.com has two blurbs about Angels' picks today in their overall wrap-up of Day 2:

https://www.mlb.com/news/2023-mlb-draft-day-2-complete-coverage

Pick 10 (174th overall), Angels: Camden Minacci, RHP, Wake Forest (No. 160)
The Demon Deacons spent a good chunk of the spring at No. 1 in the polls, and after Minacci’s selection, the program boasts seven picks through the first 174 made this year. The fifth Wake pitcher taken in 2023, Minacci shows a mid-90s fastball and whiff-heavy slider that both earn plus grades. Because of those two pitches and a high-effort delivery, he’ll remain a reliever in the Halos system.

Pick 10 (234th overall), Angels: Barrett Kent, RHP, Pottsboro (Texas) HS (No. 126)
The Arkansas commit has the four-pitch mix and size (6-foot-4) to project as a starter in the pros. He can touch 96 with his fastball, though his velocity has been inconsistent, and his curveball, slider and changeup all earn average grades. Should the Halos sign him away from the Razorbacks, Kent could be a No. 4 option if it all clicks on his long road of development.

Is Kent going to get some of the remaining slot money from drafting Schanuel?   Projected pick # 126, but went over 100 picks later.

Probably.  That's why it's best to reserve judgment of individual picks and instead look at the entire draft on the whole.  I think they'll have a chunk of money to offer on their 11th or 12th round pick, too, so probably two significant overslot options to complement Schanuel's underslot.

Dana was drafted on the 3rd day a year ago and given significant over slot money.   Has worked out well so far, in A+ ball a year out of HS.

Right, and they used the same idea with Albright, too.

It seems to be a solid overall approach - drafting a good amount of players you can accelerate through the farm system, but complementing that with some high-risk guys that you want to take a shot on and sign for overslot.

In 2021, they drafted a ton of pitchers, several of which have accelerated through the farm.  They did the same last year with Neto, and both Joyce and Mederos have made cameo appearances.  Would not be surprised to see several of the 2023 draft picks play by the first half of next year.

I really haven't followed this draft as much as the previous once's. I'm excited about Kent, four pitch mix with some guy stuff upside. I am a bit skeptical with the Schanuel pick, but seem like the power will ultimately determine his ceiling. Rios is the pick that has gotten me excited, I read a few reports on him and he could be one of the hidden gems in the entire draft.

From TBW:

“McIlvaine said they could play a similar scenario that would garner them a potential second-or-third round type player, though it would not be the same financial situation as Dana and Albright going well over $1 million in bonus expenditures.”

Seems like it might be tough to get a 2nd/3rd round talent if you can’t offer $1M+ but idk.

This is from the linked article a few posts above which is by Taylor Blake Ward, and is a nice summary of day two.  “Drew Dominguez has been talking about (Chris) for years as a guy we need to get,” McIlvaine stated.  “Drew stayed on him and was jumping up and down about it still today. We walked out in the hallway after calling (Chris) and Drew was jumping up and down. So excited that we got him. It’s great. It’s fun to see that kind of passion. It’s way easier to take a guy when our scouts have that sort of conviction with players.”

Gotta like this scout Drew Dominguez who also signed Werner Blakely, Caden Dana, and Mason Erla.

List of top players available (Day 3)

Will Taylor, OF, Dutch Forks (S.C.) HS (No. 20)
Peyton Stovall, SS, Haughton (La.) HS (No. 29)
Gage Jump, LHP, JSerra Catholic (Calif.) HS (No. 43)
Chase Burns, RHP, Beech (Tenn.) HS (No. 47)
Jackson Baumeister, RHP, The Bolles School (Fla.) HS (No. 53)
Thatcher Hurd, RHP, Mira Costa (Calif.) HS (No. 60)
Tommy Dilandri, OF, Palo Verde (NV) HS (No. 61)
Alex Mooney, SS, St. Marys Prep (MI) (No. 64)
Braden Montgomery, OF/RHP, Madison Central (MS) HS (No. 66)
Davis Diaz, SS/C, Acalanes (Calif.) HS (No. 71)

You’ll see the top-ranked players on MLB Pipeline’s Draft Top 250 list are all high schoolers. In all likelihood, they will head on to honor their college commitments. But there are always exceptions as numerous players taken in the later rounds have been signed for over-slot deals in the bonus pool system.

In that system, teams have a certain amount of money to spend in the top 10 rounds of the Draft, a pool based on slot values for each selection they have. For picks beyond the 10th, teams can spend up to $125,000 per selection without it counting against that pool. In the new system, teams have discovered they have bonus pool money left over once they’ve figured out bonuses for picks on Days 1 and 2 and they can use it to go over that $125,000 to sign Day 3 draftees.

It’s a low-risk proposition. In the top 10 rounds, a team loses a pick’s slot value from its pool if a player doesn’t sign. That’s not the case on Day 3, so a team can take any of the above high school players, or any player for that matter, and not have to worry about a non-signing impacting the pool. Any bonus above that $125K threshold will count against that pool, however.

Top players taken in Rounds 11-20

Among the best players ever selected in rounds 11-20 are Hall of Famers Andre Dawson (11th, 1975), Ryne Sandberg (20th, 1978) and Jim Thome (13th, 1989), future Hall of Famer Albert Pujols (13th, 1999), former MVPs Jose Canseco (15th, 1982), Jeff Kent (20th, 1989), Don Mattingly (19th, 1979) and Dave Parker (14th, 1970) and Cy Young Award winners Orel Hershiser (17th, 1979) and Bret Saberhagen (19th, 1982).
