I hated the Haren/Marmol trade idea from the get go, but at this point the price is presumably next to nothing and this team is going nowhere......

Worst case, he's awful and loses games for a 3rd or 4th place team and is gone.

Best case, he finds some sort of non-awful form and the team can try to flip him somewhere else for anything.

Odds are he probably continues to suck, but what's left to lose at this point?

EDIT: I did some more checking, and it turns out he has the 4th best SO/9 innings all-time.

Had that deal gone down and Marmol was pitching for the Angels, I bet they'd still be trotting his ass out there for every Save opp.

I'd take the 2007-08 or 2010 versions of Marmol any day.

 

2010: 38 Saves, 177 K's in 77.2 innings.

Marmol is the anti-Blanton. He's allowed the fewest hits/9 innings of any pitcher all-time (minimum 400 IP), but he also walks a lot of batters. 7th highest BB/9 all-time.

those are the moves that killed the whole JeDi mystique for me. Although at the time I had to admit that the moves looked SO bad, I figured there had to be some sort of hidden angle or inside information that was way over my head that made them somehow good deals. So far doesn't look that way.

Maybe there was. Haren is now on the DL, and Blanton is looking much better as of late.

Might as well corner the market on washed up relievers.
