Alex Cobb gave the Angels further reason to be encouraged on Monday night.

Cobb struck out 10 for the first time in nearly seven years, and Shohei Ohtani drove in two insurance runs with a 119 mph double, helping the Angels to a 10-3 victory over the Royals in Kansas City.

Cobb had all of his strikeouts and he didn’t allow a run through five innings, reaching double figures for the first time since 2014. He retired 12 of 14 hitters on 65 pitches at that point, getting the Royals to flail at his changeup.

This outing followed a quality start in Cobb’s Angels debut. They have won both of his starts.

The sixth inning somewhat tainted his performance, though, as three consecutive Royals hitters reached to break up his shutout. Cobb was pulled with just one run on the board, but two more runs were charged to him when Jorge Soler singled against Steve Cishek.

That cut the lead to 4-3, but then Ohtani got the cushion back in the top of the seventh with a bullet off the base of the right field fence.

It was the hardest-hit ball in the majors so far in the young season.

Ohtani also had a bloop double, driving in another run, in the ninth. Ohtani leads the Angels with 11 RBIs this season, to go with a .333 average and 1.109 OPS

Mike Trout followed with a two-run home run, his fourth of the season, to give the Angels a comfortable lead. The Angels have hit at least one homer in all 10 games this season.

The night wasn’t without negatives, though.

Catcher Max Stassi was removed in the seventh inning with left thumb irritation. There was no immediate word on whether Stassi was expected to miss any time.

More to come on this story.
