To my knowledge a lot of the distillers turned their vats into hand sanitizer operations with Covid.

Although, even before Covid a lot of bottles saw sharp increases in price because of supply/demand. Whiskey and bourbon has seen a crazy spike in consumption to where there was already concern of shortages with certain distillers.

Whiskey is gaining more popularity every day and Macallan is a popular name. They were always on the higher end of the price scale so naturally it would go up with demand. McKenna 10 year was quickly becoming one of my favorite bourbons, especially for under $40. It won "Whiskey of the Year" in 2019 and it is now $100 , if you can find it.

Because there's a certain type of dude that thinks that by drinking Macallan or owning a Rolex that they've "made it" and their insecurities about their father will be assuaged, and any problems they experience from having erectile dysfunction or a small penis will be ameliorated.

I don’t think this is that far off. Except the part about @calscuf. He drinks Coors Light. Or Coors Banquet Premium. The opposite of fine whiskey. So perhaps he is well endowed?
