Angels acquire Jose Iglesias from the Orioles for Garrett Stallings and Jean Pinto

It's pretty impressive how many off season acquisitions this team has made the last few year that haven't even finished the season with the team because they've been let go.  And while the prospect haul for guys they've brought on haven't been crazy, the fact that most of them have ended up an utter disaster is just a waste.  Might as well have kept the depth.

there are deals that don't work out so great and then others where it's just a miserable disaster.  Iglesias had an 85 wRC+ and was the worst defensive rated SS in the league.  I just don't understand why people would want him back.

From MLB Trade Rumors

As evidenced by his career production, Iglesias has never been a particularly fearsome hitter. He’s instead long been regarded as one of the game’s top defensive infielders, which has led to regular opportunities as an everyday shortstop with the Tigers, Reds, Orioles and Angels in recent seasons. As MLBTR’s Mark Polishuk recently examined, though, Iglesias’ defensive metrics have tumbled this season — a problem that has plagued much of the club.

Defensive Runs Saved has pegged Iglesias as 21 runs below average at shortstop this season, the league’s worst mark for a player at any position. Ultimate Zone Rating and Statcast’s Outs Above Average aren’t quite so bearish, but both systems also peg Iglesias as below average with the glove. Single-season defensive metrics can be variable, and Iglesias is being compared to his peers at shortstop — who tend to be among the game’s best overall infielders. So there remains some hope of him turning things around somewhat, but his unanimously poor ratings this year also likely suggest that his days as one of the sport’s most valuable defenders could be behind him.

They are basically saying, things aren't looking good for Iglesias but, maybe it's the Angels, not Iglesias that is the problem...

I don’t think there’s a way to statistically measure the mental part of the game where a player tries to go beyond what they’re capable of because they’re trying to put it all on their shoulders.

I do think this is an area where injuries and lack of depth have affected the Angels in several recent years. Trout, Rendon, Upton go down? Walsh presses. Angels lose defense at 3B? Iglesias tries to do too much. Pitchers pitch with zero margin of error because of lack of confidence in bullpen or defense and overthink.

This is an aspect that’s true all across baseball and certainly not the sole (or major) reason for the Angels struggles but I do think at times it may be especially relevant here given some of the pressures to compete, get Trout to playoffs, take advantage of Ohtani’s historic season. Guys press. Especially rookies and we’ve leaned heavily on them the last few seasons.
