Just seeing people jump off the building to commit suicide and not burn was traumatizing.

A history project I used to have the kids do gave them the option of reporting on historical events. Many chose 9/11. Had not seen pictures of the jumpers until then, and I ended up removing those pictures from their displays since it was part of open house for recruiting new students.

Yeah, I didn't catch it until many years later when it was a focal point of a conversation.

Speaking of history projects, do you guys still have kids build missions when you get around to the Spanish trying to convert Native Americans to Catholics? One of my favorite school projects .

That used to happen in 4th grade when they studied California history. They changed the curriculum about ten years ago in the Adventist school system and sadly, it’s no longer being taught in my school.

Bummer. And you're right, I think it was 4th grade when I did that project and was top 3, so they put my display in the library which meant some assholes stole some of my mini pitchforks and shovels that were on the display.

I had Mission Santa Barbara. That was one of the most detailed projects I've ever done in my life.

I remember my mom got way more involved than I did and was about that life.

I had an idea and how to cut the cardboard, but she wasn't having any of it. She drove my ass to Michael's and we bought some kind of stucco spray paint for the cardboard walls, we did some interior design work, and as mentioned above, even built some kind of horse stable/farm area with animals and tools. Not gonna lie, the shit was kind of badass.

As for the missions, I think at that time we went to San Juan Capistrano. Did the whole tour and what not.
