With Stassi likely unavailable by Opening Day, and Bemboom really being more of a AAA depth option, sure seems the Angels will be in the market for a catcher officially now.

I thought they'd bring him back to partner with Stassi back there, and if a better option came available for cheap later in the off-season, they'd be advantageous and capitalize. 

By non-tendering Smith, I think they've made it pretty clear that they'll be in the market for an upgrade. I just hope they don't need to spend much for that upgrade.

I don’t understand the Smith move unless they’ve already got something in the works. They definitely need a catcher now, perhaps two.

Just connecting the dots. Avila's dad is the GM in Detroit, Eppler has a good c working relationship with him and Avila Jr. is one those guys that has a ton of respect around the game. He also had experience working with Maddon in Chicago, and offers some offensive upside behind the dish. He adds another left handed bat to the lineup and has experience at 1B, which the Angels will like. 

I'm guessing they get him for 1/4.
