Walker Buehler has pitched:

  • 122.1 IP,  3.38 ERA, 1.030 WHIP
  • 3.12 FIP
  • 1.5BB/9
  • 10.1 K/9
  • 6.85 K/BB

But only has 1.0 Baseball reference WAR.  Can one of you smarter folks explain how that is?

You probably need one of the even nerdier guys like @Inside Pitch to better explain it, but the short version is that BR calculates their WAR for pitchers by Runs Allowed, which includes unearned runs, whereas Fangraphs tries to take out the defense and focus more on what is in a pitcher's control, using FIP (Fielding Independent Pitching). So if your defense sucks, your bWAR will be worse. fWAR equalizes defense.

In other words, a pitcher will theoretically have the same fWAR whether he has Andrelton Simmons or Miggy Cabrera playing shortstop, whereas bWAR will reflect more positively on the pitcher with Simmons.

As he was being removed from the game, someone in the Pirates dugout  was mouthing off to him, and Garrett made a very determined march over to their dugout, threw down his glove, balled up his left fist, and delivered a major league haymaker.

Both managers were ready to go at it, too. David Bell, the Reds manager, had been ejected earlier and is probably looking at a sizable suspension for coming back onto the field.

As usual, Puig blew a gasket and was ready to take on the entire Pirates organization single handedly.

Heard the Reds GM on MLB Network yesterday. He said that they didn't take Puig out of the lineup because they weren't sure that the deal was going to go down. They got confirmation during the eighth inning. He said that they figured that he wouldn't get hurt in the field for two outs, but they weren't going to let him bat again. Then the fight happened in the ninth, and he was holding his breath.

PedSux have pitching woes too.  Their team ERA isn't much better than the Halos' team ERA.   They only have two relievers who have gotten the job done.

Their starters can pitch deeper into games of course than the Halos pitchers do, but they are giving up a significant number of runs.

Porcello and Cashner have been bombed lately

Watched the Sux-Yanks game tonight. Weird game. Two run homer by J. D. Martinez in the top of the first, grand slam by Gleyber Torres in the bottom of the first, and nothing the rest of the way.

I went to a dodgers game around 75 or so and Ron Cey hit a slam in the B1, and that was it for the rest of the game. 4-0 doggies.
