FIU pedestrian bridge collapses, people trapped underneath

Quote

The bridge was installed at Southwest 109th Avenue Saturday morning, intended eventually to provide pedestrian access across Tamiami Trail from FIU’s main campus to Sweetwater, where thousands of students live in off-campus housing or in FIU’s newer dorms.

ABC is reporting at least 7 fatalities.

"Touted as an “instant bridge,” the 950-ton pedestrian walkway was installed in a single morning"

Terrible.  Could you imagine having anything to do with this bridge being built?  First and foremost there's the guilt and then a lot of understandably angry people are going to be suing the **** out of anyone involved.

The construction company had safety complaints before.

Construction company involved in collapsed FIU bridge had safety complaints

At least one MCM project resulted in a lawsuit concerning safety, CNN has learned. Records show the Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited MCM for 11 violations involving construction projects in Miami and Hialeah, Florida, between 2014 and 2017.

An engineer had noticed some cracking two days before the bridge collapsed, but his voice mail wasn't retrieved until after the collapse.

Florida: Voicemail about bridge cracking wasn’t picked up

The voicemail left on a landline wasn’t heard by a state DOT employee until Friday because the employee was out of the office on an assignment, the agency said in an email.

Their safety record is pretty solid.  Every large construction companies have safety complaints.

Regardless, they are going to be sued out of business.

When finished, the span would have been supported from above, with a tall, off-center tower and cables attached to the walkway. That tower had not yet been installed, and it was unclear what builders were using as temporary supports.

This is the last line of the article and what caught my eye

that could end up being the prosecutors opening line in each of the trials against the construction company.
