A newly proposed bill in California could ban grocery stores and certain retailers from offering self-checkout options for customers in an effort to cut down on theft.

Senate Bill 1446 would "prohibit a grocery or retail drug establishment from providing a self-service checkout option for customers unless specified conditions are met," according to a summary of the proposed legislation.

Some of these conditions are that no more than two self-service checkout stations can be monitored by any one employee and the employee has to be relieved of all other duties, according to the bill summary.

It would also make grocers and certain retailers assess the potential impact of using certain artifical intelligence or other technology that "significantly affects the essential job functions of its employees" or completely eliminates their jobs.

Democratic state Sen. Lola Smallwood-Cuevas, who introduced the bill, said self-checkout machines cause 16 times more losses compared to check-outs with a cashier.

My guess is this bill is sponsored by unions. What's funny is that they are so worried about theft.  Yet if you use Ai as facial recognition to prevent theft, it's racial profiling. Also, the whole reason for self checkout is to cut labor costs since it's so expensive. For some places the labor cost is more expensive than the shrink.

Seems like the issues addressed in the bill would be better worked out between unions and retailers.

Why negotiate, when you can have the government force things on retailers for you?

Remember when pretty boy said the budgetary office didn't know what they were talking about regarding the deficit, and that it wasn't too bad?  All while promoting another $7 billion to fund homeless, that since it passed by the stupid, can't be taken out of the budget.

Newsom to update his budget proposal Friday as California's deficit is likely growing

Reality slapped him in the face quite hard.

A longstanding emissions reduction program may lead to a 50-cent increase in gasoline prices within two years in California, according to a little-known state air quality regulator report.

In September, the California Air Resources Board (CARB), the state's primary environmental regulator, reported gas prices will rise next year by about 50 cents a gallon and every year thereafter to aid in clean air efforts. The price increase does not include the existing gas tax in the state.
