Good News: The Shoe is Back

According to Jeff Fletcher, Matt Shoemaker faced hitters Wednesday for the first time since he was hit in the head by a line drive last September.

Hopefully he's able to overcome the mental hurdle. I'm sure its all good now in spring training but will be much different in an actual game or when a line drive whizzes by him.

Matt Shoemaker was really back pitching great when this happened.  He carried the team into the postseason to the ALDS in 2014, a series that could have been won vs. KC. Weaver & Shoe really pitched great in Games 1 & 2 which I think could have / should have been won.

Whether the hat insert makes makes any difference or not, as long as it puts his mind at ease even a little it will be useful.

It is actually carbon-fiber. From the size of it, it will probably provide about 100-200 MPa of compression strength which won't be enough to completely absorb a line drive but it may be enough protection to soften the blow, distribute some of the impact energy through the fibers, and prevent him from getting the more serious injury he received last time.

Worth a shot.

I also read he is going to try different types of protective head gear this spring training.  Which ever one he likes the most, is the one he is going to use.
