You can add Pennington to that list too. And it frees up Cron and Marte a bit more in trade discussions. Valbuena could just as easily remain a bench bat next year. He also could be trade bait. This is all about depth and giving Eppler dozens of more possibilities with which to handle deals throughout the season.

You're correct about depth ... with the emphasis on winning now.

Fletcher reporting the deal is complete - 2/$15m with a mutual option. A little more expensive than I thought but nothing outrageous.

For luxury tax purposes, I think this puts us around $182.5m; $195m is the threshold. Should be our highest opening day payroll ever, and by a decent margin.

So, he received a 1.35 raise per year unless there is a balloon payment on the option year....

I love BB reference! I always go down to the bottom to see who the player compares to I think it's pretty interesting and mostly spot on. I'll take his 2016 #'s with Houston if it gets us to the Post Season!

I'd like to get some more pitching but if Wieters could be had on a one or two year deal, pretty hard to say no.....

So much of our payroll is tied up in one-year commitments at this point, I can see us going right up to and possibly even over the tax threshold before the year starts. We did last year when we brought in Chacin and Lincecum.

Wieters (say $11m) and a cheap arm or two (no more than a couple mil) points us just marginally over the threshold.

More than likely we wind up clearing up some of that salary by midseason anyways to get back under.
