Weaver or Wilson?

 Who do you think will be the better pitcher next season? I keep thinking keeping one of them on a low risk one year deal might be wise.  Who do you think would be the better bet?  (Im hoping we sign Nova)

I wouldn't sign either. If I was absolutely forced into signing one the week before spring training and we had done nothing else to address any pitching, I'd sign Weaver because I know he'd at least be able to take the mound, eat innings, and spin a decent game every third or fourth time out.

I don't know if CJ will ever pitch again.

I wouldn't rely on either of them. But if we were going to sign one of them to a low risk / one year deal, I feel that Wilson has a higher ceiling and may be a better choice. Weaver is a competitor, but his body does not seem to be there for him any longer. Wilson has less mileage on his arm. So i would feel better with Wilson.

Wilson is far too DL prone in his career.   Even as a reliever, I would have serious doubts, and he probably doesn't want to go back to the pen.

Yeah Wilson is like 35? 36? Coming off shoulder surgery (and having had multiple other arm surgeries) I have serious doubts on whenever he'll ever pitch again. 

At least Weaver can get on a mound and save the pen.

Is Wilson even throwing the ball yet? I suspect he'll have a audition like Greg Holland is having soon.

Oct. 10 he tweeted he'd start throwing in 3-4 weeks.

He threw a showcase today and was only in the 88-91 range, thus killing any meaningful free agent value that he had.

It isn't really "low risk" to bring Weaver back to have the crap beaten out of him again.

Haha yep. He was the worst pitcher in the league by xFIP, cFIP and Deserved Run Average and was worth 5.32 wins below replacement according to Baseball Prospectus. What are people looking at to think it's a good idea to bring him back, or even to think that anyone would want to sign him?

weaver is awesome. weaver should have his number retired on the angels. weaver should never throw another pitch again.

wilson? maybe for like a million or two. other than that, let that ship sail off into the midnight waters.

If it's either or, then Weaver.  I just don't think Wilson will be back.  Almost a full year out, and it's not TJ surgery.  He's just shredded wheat at this point.

73 pitchers qualified for the ERA title this year and 66 of them throw a changeup. Of those 66, 35 of them had an average changeup velocity that was faster than Weaver's average fastball velocity.

CJ fits the "one year low-risk flier" description more than Weaver, but his arm is toast.

Jered is looking for at least 2 years they said and is a Boras client.

 

Neither should be in any kind of plans.

A Spring Training invite with incentives to make the team won't hurt anyone. The offer with Mulder was ridiculous but it didn't hurt us at all. Wasn't Weaver's velocity coming up near the end?

Weaver's ops against last year was .862.  

There were 30 major leaguers who had an ops higher than .862.  

It's actually quite a testament to his pitching IQ that he was able to have only a 5 era in his 180ip.  

a lineup filled with .860 ops hitters should score about 6 runs per game.

can you imagine a scenario where Mike Scioscia wouldn't have Jered Weaver in the rotation given the option?

I'm not advocating for bringing him back, just saying if I would choose between him or CJ Wilson, I'd take Weaver, hands down.

If being the worst pitcher in baseball - and by some measures having one of the worst pitching seasons ever - didn't knock him out of the rotation what do you actually think would?

Weaver said that he definitely wasn't retiring. That could be interpreted as "I'm interested in coaching" or some other baseball related position.

Scioscia once sent Weaver down for some seasoning. Not sure he could do that again.
