Removed from the 40 man roster and placed in irrevocable waivers, so anyone can claim him. If you are unclaimed on waivers you can be traded, released or outrighted to the minors (unless you have sufficient service time to refuse the latter option).

Until he lost the ability to throw and then hit, he was actually pretty damn good and we (myself included) undervalued him a lot. BP puts him at 2.9 WARP in 2013 and 3.1 in 2014. We as fans really underappreciated his pitch framing.
