430K on a 180 million budget?

That is every penny.

That amount would cover the pro-rated portion that new players added to the 40-man for September call-ups would receive, i.e. Nate Smith. No it isn't much, but it's an example of where shedding a few hundred thousand has immediate results. You're basically just paying that money to a 'new hire'

cool.  i was hoping we'd do this.  Any time you can add projectable arms it's a good thing.

btw, he got blown up in two starts this year.  1ip, 10er and 3.1ip with 9er.  In his 11 other games he pitched 57.2ip, with 56h, 20bb, 58k, and a 2.89 era.

This is promising. Obviously it is cherry-picking, but it does show that especially for minor league SPs ERA really isn't a good indicator, as a lot of them get totally blasted in a couple starts.

He probably slots in somewhere along the lines of guys like Jake Jewell, maybe a bit below guys like Jordan Kipper.

Also, I admittedly do not know at what point the luxury tax is calculated, but I recall once Lincecum came aboard it was mentioned that we were either just at - or just over - the luxury tax line. Shedding Salas, Nava, Smith and demoting Lincecum may have been just enough to keep us under the tax line.

While we weren't going to be over the luxury tax by an amount where the tax would hurt us, it is important to reset the penalty, as it increases in percentage each season that you're over.

The WHIP in the good starts still needs some work done.

Well at least that is an explanation.  Is someone being added to the roster?

Fernando Salas' Mets debut is in the books. The reliever entered with the Mets trailing 6-1 in the seventh inning Thursday, after Christian Yelich belted a three-run homer against Josh Smoker. Salas retired three of the four batters he faced. The lone Marlin to reach came on a single by Jeff Mathis. Salas was acquired late Wednesday for minor-league right-hander Erik Manoah.
