State rail authority will seek a $35-million increase for key project in bullet train plan

It seems like yesterday, that no public funds will be used was the motto.  I guess for the bullet train people when asked whats a motto, their response is nothing, what's a motto with you?

Why anyone would believe anything the government says when they decide to be involved in multi-million or multi-billion dollar projects is beyond me.

They're not accountable to anyone, they don't have to open it on time, they don't have to stay on budget, and they can change their mind about funding or project details at any point in time, and what are the tax payers going to do about it?

Absolutely nothing except continue to be blasted in the ass with taxes.

TIme to kill the project now and cut your losses, California.

i'm still thoroughly convinced that the amount of lawsuits filed and the time necessary to deal with them is going to take so bloody long that this idiot train will never be built. the proposed pathway cuts right through some neighborhoods and schools, and people just aren't going to be okay with that.

we will never see this train come to life.

Shouldn't you guys be spending your money on desalination plants up and down the coast?

The problem with desal is a weird one for California.

First the electricity output.  We would need a lot of it, and we don't want nukes, or oil and coal burning facilities.

Then the sludge.  The coastal commission is worried about the environment in the sea.

Ironically, they are ok with offshore drilling.

It won't matter anyways.  When California goes down, it will take the rest of the world with it.  It's just a matter of when.  Unless Giant Meteor beats us to it.

"The journey from Bakersfield in the Central Valley to Burbank will require about 36 miles of underground passage, the most challenging tunneling project in the nation’s history."

Smart move. You get to San Fran in 2 hours AND you don't have to look at Bakersfield.

Desal stinks, that is the biggest problem.  All the rich people that live along the coast are against it.

CA should have nuke power but they are pussies.

There's been a push that started in 2005 to convert the plant in HB on PCH to a desalination plant.  Currently per the website the last update was about a month ago stating they were trying to streamline the permitting but I swear that was what they were saying over a year ago.

I think it's easy for any of us to say that we should be using more nuclear power but when it comes to putting one in our own backyard people are generally against it.  After the Fukushima disaster there's even more hesitation when it comes to Nuclear plants near a coast line.  Of course they could find somewhere that's elevated but people still don't want to raise their family where a nuclear power plant makes up part of the skyline they see.

we have a great need for water, and short of destroying the environment, building desal plants should have taken place twenty years ago. it's idiotic not to do this, even though there's cost to get it started. we're smart enough (not talking to you, sacramento) to be able to figure out solutions to problems like smell and sludge.

these should be built instead of that idiotic train that's going to be 25% filled.
