Nats-Reds Discussing Brandon Phillips Trade

I don't think the Nationals have signed a compensation bound free agent yet.  So they have their first round still, #17.  Nats also get the #29 pick ATM for losing Zimmerman.

Interestingly.  When looking at that MLB site.  If you scroll down.  I did not know that about the Competitive Balance picks.  Also interesting that they can be traded.

Just because someone is a "perceived" upgrade doesn't actually mean he actually is an upgrade.

That there is someone who posted this, suggesting Brandon Phillips is NOT an upgrade over Johnny Giavotella, shows why the future of our planet is in such grave danger.

What about Kelly Johnson for second? Lefty bat, some pop, not going to light the world on fire but he'd be cheap, no draft pick attached, should put production at minimum around Giavotella's 2015, with potential for something better. Decent defense and can play multiple positions.

Think if we added one of the more expensive outfielders he'd be a good budget pickup.

The Reds probably want to shed salary, so I don't think we have anything to trade in this case. Apparently "prospects" are involved, whatever the hell those are.

Could be the Nats found a way to shed one of the two closers they have. Makes sense.

We should be able to get Phillips for basic salary relief and an ok prospect. Which we have a few of.

Basically just something like Gatto for Phillips and all his salary.

Kubitza is an average defender at 3rd. He does not have the athleticism to handle a position that requires a ton of range

That is a potential option. They used him there late last year. He has more range than Gia and a better arm, but because of his unfamiliarity, he looked a bit like a duck out of water out there. I think best case scenario there is he turns into a bad defensive 2B, in comparison to the worst which is Gia.

But I don't see this happening. The team would sooner move Escobar to 2B and Kubitza to 3B, where he's above average.

Half true. Kubitza grew into an above average defender last year. Quite impressive the growth he made. He has a ton of athleticism and range, so that wouldn't be the reason he wouldn't be a 2B. It'd bf more about unfamiliarity and footwork.

The end result is the same, he wouldn't make a good 2B, but he reasons are completely different. It's sort of like saying ice cream makes a terrible window because it's too soft. I mean yeah, sort of, but it's really just the fact that you can't see through it and it melts.

Saw PJ Phillips quite a few times with the Quakes, totally fell off the face of the earth and hadn't even thought of him until you brought him up.
