Gameday Thread: Angels vs. Mariners (5/4/15)

I'll give MS the benefit of the doubt and assume Perez didn't get there in time to be ready to play tonight.

Aybar at leadoff - I'm not even mad anymore. Just smfh.

Giovotella in the 6th spot - love G, but that shows you how inept the offense has been.

also, would be nice for Shoemaker to be better than "meh" one time this season.

I'd like to believe that too but....

Maybe it isn't the best idea to start Carlos Perez in his major league debut against King Felix.

but the way CI has looked, you'd be better off bringing in a random fan from the stands to hit. Maybe Perez is pumped up by his debut so much that he doesn't have time to worry that he's facing King Felix. Presumably they brought the guy up here to play  . . .  so play him!

Anyone know the reason behind Shoemaker's drop in velocity? Going from 90 MPH to 88 MPH is pretty extreme.

He's not the same pitcher because of that drop.

Unless your name is Weaver, it's rare to see such a quick decline in velocity.

okay here's shoemaker addressing the velocity drop a few weeks ago.

http://m.angels.mlb.com/news/article/119230548/angels-right-hander-matt-shoemaker-searching-for-more-velocity-as-season-goes-on

Angels pitcher Matt Shoemaker is throwing well to begin the season, posting a 2-0 record in two starts. But Shoemaker is continuing to look for improvements, mostly for more velocity on his fastball, according to MLB.com.

"For me, that's usually how it is," said Shoemaker. "I feel like early on in the season, with any season, I get stronger. I don't feel anything different. I think it's just the strength and getting into a rhythm."

Shoemaker is averaging 88.9 mph on his fastball this season after averaging 91.3 in 2014. Shoemaker thinks it is mostly about his recent weight loss.

"That's what it usually does. I'm not very far off, which is a good thing - but it is kind of funny how quickly I can regain the weight.

"I feel like when I'm at that weight, there's more there, just because there's more behind the ball and I have more strength."
