Honestly didn't want to bring that up but was wondering if the extreme weight loss played a role in the velocity dip. Hope he's right and that it ticks up. The splitter loses some of his effectiveness when his FB is 88 rather than 91-93

Angels pitcher Matt Shoemaker is throwing well to begin the season, posting a 2-0 record in two starts. But Shoemaker is continuing to look for improvements, mostly for more velocity on his fastball, according to MLB.com.

"For me, that's usually how it is," said Shoemaker. "I feel like early on in the season, with any season, I get stronger. I don't feel anything different. I think it's just the strength and getting into a rhythm."

Shoemaker is averaging 88.9 mph on his fastball this season after averaging 91.3 in 2014. Shoemaker thinks it is mostly about his recent weight loss.

"That's what it usually does. I'm not very far off, which is a good thing - but it is kind of funny how quickly I can regain the weight.

"I feel like when I'm at that weight, there's more there, just because there's more behind the ball and I have more strength."

I would put Johnny G hitting leadoff. at least he has been getting on base ocasionally.

 

I'm with you.  I don't think he'll keep it up all year, but until he cools off, why not use him at the top, then move Aybar down to 6/7...something like that.

Trout will hit a solo dinger in the bottom of the 1st like he always does against Felix, then the Angels will muster up 2 more hits the rest of the game and lose 3-1.

 

Iannetta will go 0 for 3 with 2 K's and a popout.

There really aren't many even decent catchers around MLB these days, though.  It's a weak position in general.

I don't think you realize how good Iannetta was last year.
